The year and place of birth – 1967, Leningrad. The languages of childhood - German, Lithuanian, Polish and Russian.
A graduate of the Electrophysical Faculty at the Leningrad State Electrotechnical Institute named after V.I. Ulyanov (Lenin) (at present - the Saint Petersburg State Electrotechnical University «LETI» named after V.I. Ulyanov (Lenin)), engineer with honors in electronic technics; specialty – «Semiconductors and dielectrics». Additionally, a graduate of the Public Professions Faculty at the same institute, language assistant in English, German and Swedish (1990).
From 1990 until 1991 – a visiting trainee in the Committee on Science and Technology of USSR at the department for scientific and technical collaboration with capitalistic and developing countries, language assistant in Dutch, Swedish and English.
From 1994 until 1998 – a post-graduate student of «LETI»; specialty - «Germanic languages», in which a candidate's thesis is defended in 1999 at the Pyatigorsk State Linguistic University.
In 2007 at the Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University a doctoral thesis is defended; specialty – «Theory of language».
The academic status of associate professor was awarded in 2007.
The positions at «LETI»: engineer from 1990, assistant from 1992, senior lecturer from 1994, associate professor from 2007. From 2014 until present – full professor and head of the foreign languages department. A member of editorial boards for the scientific journal «Discourse» (ISSN 2412-8562 (print), ISSN 2658-7777 (online)) and the scientific journal «Bulletin of Russian Christian Humanitarian Academy – Philological Sciences».
From 1997 until 2000 – visiting lecturer at the Representative office of Stockholm in Saint Petersburg.
From 2005 until 2012 – visiting interpreter at the Economic and Commercial Representation of Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels (the Consulate General of Belgium).
The scientific interests of A.A. Szumkow lie in the fields of Theory of Language, Grammar of Germanic, Romanic, Baltic and Slavic languages, Formal Models in Linguistics, Translation Studies, Language Contacts, Belgium Studies. He is the author of more than 100 scientific and educational works, including 7 monographies.
A.A. Szumkow is the vice-chairman of the Organizing Committee for the inter-university scientific and practical conference with international participation «Current Issues in Language Studies» (Russian Science Citation Index), which is held by «LETI» from 2011, and a member of the Organizing Committee for the all-Russia scientific conference «Information – Communication – Society» (Russian Science Citation Index), which is held by «LETI» from 2000.
