BORIS V. MARKOV

PhD in Philosophy, Professor, Professor of the Department of Philosophical Anthropology of the Institute of Philosophy, St. Petersburg State University.

Professor Boris Markov was born in 1946. He has been working at St. Petersburg State University since 1974, since 1989 as a Professor, from 1989 to 1994 as a Head of the Department of Ontology and Theory of Knowledge, and from 1994 to 2014 – Head of the Department of Philosophical Anthropology.

Boris Markov's first research works were devoted to the theory of knowledge and the methodology of science; in the 1990s he investigated the history of the relationship between human spirituality and corporality on the basis of phenomenology, hermeneutics and psychoanalysis methods. Then he was interested in analyzing the structures of everyday life, communicative practices, and techniques of self-control and self-discipline of a person.

In recent years Boris Markov has been engaged in the analysis of modern society and searching for forms of its unity. In addition to “understanding”, he described other forms of experience of recognizing the other, in particular, the anthropogenic impact of labor, power, social institutions and disciplinary spaces, technology, architecture, and mass art.

Boris Markov is the founder and the leader of the St. Petersburg School of Philosophical Anthropology, a renowned and recognized specialist in the philosophy of language. He has published over 400 research works, including 12 monographs and 6 author's textbooks. He was an editor of more than 15 collective monographs, a member of the writing team of many textbooks on philosophy. More than a dozen of his works has been translated into foreign languages. His works on the methodology of science, philosophical and cultural anthropology, philosophy of language and theory of communication, are read and discussed by the scientific community, students study using his textbooks at 175 Russian universities. Under his guidance 25 researchers defended their PhD (Candidate's dissertation) theses and 16 doctoral theses.

Research and publishing projects of Boris Markov were repeatedly supported by the Russian Federal and International Programs, according to which he successfully acted as a research advisor and executive officer. From 1993 to 2000 Markov led the department team in the development of the international research project in conjunction with the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Greifswald, in which he delivered a course of lectures on the development of philosophical anthropology in Russia. Markov published 5 collective monographs with German colleagues in German and Russian.

Boris Markov is a member of the Academic Council of the Institute of Philosophy, chairman of the specialized Dissertation Council. For 8 years he was a member of the expert board of the Russian Foundation for Humanities, he was an expert of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and was included in the federal list of experts of the Russian Federation. He is a member of the editorial board of several reputable periodicals.

The merits of Boris Markov were awarded such titles as “Honorary Worker of Higher Education” and “Distinguished Academic of the Russian Federation”, as well as “Honorary Professor of St. Petersburg State University”.
